About Us

'Building a thriving artistic community for the 21st century'

North Queensland Music Theatre (NQMT as we were originally known) was formed in 1980 by a small group of people who wanted to present contemporary theatre to the people of Townsville. Our first musical, Man of La Mancha, was directed by Founding Member Bill Munro in 1981. A couple of years later the word ‘Opera’ was added to our name.

The early years were challenging for our fledgling Company. NQOMT was continually on the move from church halls to schools & warehouses: with the storage of sets and props scattered throughout the City and a Committee always scraping to make ends meet.

On the 21st February 1994 NQOMT was Incorporated and in 1996 we purchased our own home at Gill Park. Thanks to the generous assistance from The Queensland Government & The Townsville City Council and the determination of a hardworking Committee our future was secure. NQOMT Hall>>
